Have you ever had that one place where you are able to escape life, forget pain, or just go somewhere that makes you happy? I have, it's called Irwindale Drag Strip, and I try to make it every Thursday night. Back in 2004, an old friend of mine told me to go check out this local 1/8th mile track, "give it a shot, you won't be disappointed" he said. My husband, Brandon and I (not married at that time) were reluctant to go to an 1/8th mile track. Why go there when we can go faster at the local 1/4 mile track in Fontana Friday nights? But we decided to give it a shot otherwise, and haven't looked back since.
I remember that first time we went to check out this little track, and I never stopped going since then. The vibe, the movement of cars and the people was exactly what we needed; along with the smell of rubber, and fuel helped of course. I can post up pictures that date back to 2004 till now at this track, but I will avoid some of those. I mean, it's pretty serious when our engagement photos are taken there by the main man himself, Mike Morgan (Irwindale/Magazine Photographer).
You know you're obsessed about TNT when your schedule revolves around it. While attending college I had freelance jobs, retail jobs, and additional schooling. I would juggle not only my school schedule around Irwindale Thursday Night Thunders, but also if that new position was offered, I obviously had to have Thursday nights off. So basically when the news of Irwindale Event Center was closing was released, it literally was like an old friend had passed away. Now we are all adults, we understand money overcomes everything. Doesn't matter how much fun everyone has, or that the track keeps some of the racers off the street, or that it has been there for over 20 years. But, this was one truth that many of us just didn't want to accept.
We were then grateful when its new ownership was revealed, and now has taken over the track. More open minded track management is allowing us as a shop to integrate our business as well with personal fun. We can't wait for the opportunities to come with this local track and more racers we will try to produce.
ARS has such a passion for what Irwindale has given us racers in SoCal, that we revolve our work and life schedule around it. Irwindale has given us something to look forward to on a weekly basis. Goals have set and also have been met, a lot of money has been spent. It's fun competing against our own times, and against many friends as well. Our goal as a performance shop now is to bring in more enthusiast within the late model community. Let's go racing!
